DAZ Referencing Flap Flow Indicator for Liquids
The KOBOLD DAZ is a referencing flap flow indicator for liquids that indicates flow conditions and displays the flow quantity on a relative stainless steel scale. It is rated to 230 psi (15.9 bar), to 212 °F (100 °C) on water and 390 °F (199 °C) on oil, with a red brass housing and ½" to 1" NPT connections.
Glass windows on both sides provide a large viewing area, and the DAZ is suitable for horizontal or vertical installation with flow direction from bottom to top.
How Does the DAZ Flap Flow Indicator Work?
The DAZ uses a stainless steel flap mounted on an axle inside the red brass housing. The deflection position of the flap on the stainless steel scale plate indicates the relative flow value. Each scale position has an equivalent flow rate for each fitting size, listed below.
Flow Indicator vs. Flow Meter
The DAZ is a flow indicator with relative indication, not a flow meter, and it is not recommended for use as a flow meter. The flap position shows flow relative to a scale referenced for water and oil.
Flow Ranges and Scale Values
Three models cover water flow from 0.8 to 7.9 GPM (3.0 to 29.9 L/min) across ½", ¾", and 1" NPT connections. The relative scale is marked at positions 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10, and each position has an equivalent flow value by fitting size.

Pressure and Temperature Ratings
The DAZ is rated for a maximum pressure of 230 psi (15.9 bar). Maximum temperature depends on the liquid: 212 °F (100 °C) for water and 390 °F (199 °C) for oil. Differential pressure across the indicator at maximum flow is 13 psi (0.9 bar), and system pressure must stay above this pressure loss.
Materials of Construction
The DAZ pairs a red brass housing and soda lime glass windows with a stainless steel flap, axle, and scale panel. Seals are Klingersil C 4400, and the rings are brass. Other materials, sizes, and connections are available upon request.

Installation Requirements
Before installing the DAZ, confirm that the actual flow is within the measuring range shown on the model label and that the maximum operating pressure and temperature will not be exceeded. Seal the threaded connections with PTFE tape or a similar material.
- Flush the pipe system before fitting, and remove any transport locks and packing material.
- Inlet and outlet runs are optional but recommended: 5 × diameter as a smoothing section on each side.
- Keep high pressure and tensile loads off the threaded joints by fastening the inlet and outlet pipes mechanically about 2 in (50 mm) from each connection.
- Take up thermal expansion of the pipework with compensators, and do not use the device as the fixed point.
- Use a dirt trap with heavily contaminated media, and a magnetic filter when the liquid carries ferritic material.
Commissioning and Maintenance
Bleed the system before putting the DAZ into operation, then let the liquid flow slowly into the device to avoid pressure peaks. Sudden flow caused by solenoid valves, ball valves, or similar components can produce water hammer and destroy the device. During operation, keep the unit constantly filled, since larger bubbles in the measuring chamber can cause measurement errors.
With uncontaminated media, the DAZ is maintenance-free.

Dimensions are length × width × depth. The ½" and ¾" NPT models measure 3.35 × 2.68 × 2.36 in (85 × 68 × 60 mm), and the 1" NPT model measures 3.74 × 2.91 × 2.36 in (95 × 74 × 60 mm). For G thread connections, replace the "N" in the order code with "R".

The stainless steel flap deflects to a point on the scale plate, and that point marks the relative flow. Graduations are numbered 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10; each equals a fixed flow for the chosen fitting, so position 10 reads 5.3 GPM (20.1 L/min) on the ½" or ¾" model and 7.9 GPM (29.9 L/min) on the 1" model.
It is not recommended. The DAZ gives relative indication only: it confirms that liquid is moving and shows where flow falls on a referenced scale for water or oil. The flow figure tied to each graduation is an equivalent value, so treat the reading as relative rather than as a metered flow rate.
On water, the two smaller sizes (½" and ¾" NPT) read from 0.8 to 5.3 GPM (3.0 to 20.1 L/min), while the 1" NPT model reads from 0.9 to 7.9 GPM (3.4 to 29.9 L/min). Maximum flow for the three sizes is 6.0, 10.0, and 17.0 GPM (22.7, 37.9, and 64.4 L/min), respectively.

Yes. Vertical and horizontal mounting are both acceptable, provided flow runs from bottom to top. Straight runs are optional but recommended at five diameters before and after the indicator, and the piping should be secured roughly 2 in (50 mm) away from every threaded joint.
The standard models are DAZ-1101GN15 with a ½" NPT fitting, DAZ-1102GN20 with ¾" NPT, and DAZ-1103GN25 with 1" NPT. G threads are available by substituting R for N in the model code. During installation, seal the threads with PTFE tape or something similar.
Not when the measured liquid is clean: an uncontaminated medium keeps the indicator maintenance-free. If the liquid is heavily contaminated, add a dirt trap. If it carries ferritic material, a magnetic filter is recommended. In every case, avoid exceeding the maximum flow rate of the selected model.
