KOBOLD NGM Guided Wave Radar Level Transmitter for Tank Monitoring and Measurement
The KOBOLD NGM guided wave radar level transmitter offers cutting-edge Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) technology for precise level measurement in liquids and light solids up to 65.6 feet. This versatile instrument features a modular design with three probe options - single rod, wire rope, and concentric - making it ideal for challenging tank geometries and low-dielectric materials like oils and hydrocarbons.
Operating independently of density, temperature (-328 to 482°F), pressure (-14.5 to 580 PSIG), and humidity changes, the NGM delivers exceptional accuracy (±3mm) through its 4-wire system with complete galvanic isolation. Made in the USA and BABA compliant, this guided wave radar level transmitter offers both 4-20mA analog and programmable switching outputs, making it the perfect solution for industries requiring reliable continuous level measurement and point level detection in bypass chambers, stilling wells, and tanks with difficult geometries.
Working Principle:
- Uses Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) technology
- Generates high-frequency electromagnetic impulses
- Impulses travel along a probe immersed in the medium
- When impulses hit the medium's surface, they reflect back
- Level is calculated from time difference between sent and reflected signals
Benefits:
- High Accuracy (±3mm or 0.03% of measured value)
- Wide measuring range (up to 65 feet for liquids)
- Broad temperature range (-328 to 482°F)
- High pressure tolerance (-14.5 to 580 PSIG)
- Versatile output options (4-20mA analog and programmable switching)
- Chemical compatibility (stainless steel and PTFE wetted parts)
- Works with most liquids and light solids
- Excellent for low dielectric materials (oils, hydrocarbons)
- Suitable for difficult tank geometries
- Works in bypass chambers and stilling wells
- Unaffected by density changes
- Not impacted by humidity or conductivity
- Modular probe design for easy interchange
- Complete galvanic isolation of electronics
- Made in USA (BABA compliant)
- "Plug and play" factory configuration
- Simple field configuration via DIP switch and pushbutton
Unique Capabilities vs Other Level Transmitters:
- Direct measurement without compensation for changing density/dielectric
- Works in challenging conditions (high temperature/pressure)
- More accurate than ultrasonic or capacitive sensors
- Less affected by vapor, dust, or turbulence
- Can measure interface levels between different liquids
- Direct, precise continuous measurement
- Innovative signal analysis
- Disturbance signal suppression
- High accuracy (±3mm)
- Tool-free probe interchange
- Minimal maintenance requirements
Probe Types and Characteristics:
Single Rod (max 9.8 ft):
- Wider detection radius
- Best for liquid applications
- Ideal for bypass chambers/stilling wells
- More susceptible to signal disturbances
Wire Rope (max 65.6 ft):
- Suitable for tall tanks
- Works with liquids and light solids
- Limited headroom requirements
- Similar characteristics to single rod
Concentric (max 19.5 ft):
- Signal contained within outer tube
- Immune to external interference
- Ideal for low reflectivity liquids
- Limited to clean liquids only
- Not suitable for viscous/sticky materials or solids
Combining Guided Wave Radar with Magnetic Level Gauges for Optimum Process Control
The KOBOLD NGM guided wave radar level transmitter seamlessly integrates with magnetic level gauge bypass chambers, creating a robust dual-technology measurement system. By installing the NGM's probe inside a secondary bypass tube alongside the primary magnetic float and roller display, users benefit from both visual level indication and electronic measurement capabilities.
This redundant configuration provides operators with direct visual confirmation through the magnetic indicator while simultaneously enabling remote monitoring, data transmission, and control system integration via the NGM's output. The NGM can also be installed into a single bypass tube design that does not include the magnetic roller assembly display.
During maintenance or in case of electronic failure, the roller assembly continues to provide crucial level information, while the NGM's electronic output serves as a reliable backup to the mechanical float system, ensuring continuous process monitoring and control.

Easy Integration into Existing PLCs
The NGM guided wave radar level transmitter's 4-20mA output seamlessly integrates with existing PLC systems through a straightforward two-wire connection to any analog input module. Simply connect the NGM's output terminals to the PLC's analog input channel, configure the PLC's input scaling to match the transmitter's calibrated range (4mA = 0% level, 20mA = 100% level), and the system is ready to monitor tank levels.
The NGM's galvanically isolated 4-wire design prevents ground loops and electrical interference, ensuring reliable signal transmission, while its factory configuration minimizes setup time. For basic field adjustments, the internal DIP switch and pushbutton interface allow quick parameter modifications without specialized tools or software, making it an ideal drop-in solution for PLC system upgrades or expansions.
