The KOBOLD DUC Clamp-on Ultrasonic Flow Meter is designed for non-contact and non-intrusive flow measurement for pipes up to 20 feet in diameter. It can be used in both stationary installations of a more permanent nature, or temporary installations that allow the meter to be used in a portable manner. Because the principle of measurement does not require any parts of the device to come in contact with the flow, it is also ideal for media with matter that might damage the sensitive measuring elements of other types of flow meter technology.
The DUC delivers precise measurements, is free of drift, does not require frequent maintenance, and does not need recurring calibrations. In fact the DUC is so effective, easy to use and transfer, and delivers such high accuracy that it is often used as a way to verify the accuracy of other inline flow meters within a process.
It also features compensation for changing process temperature and vicosities, ensuring accurate readings regardless of fluctuations. The DUC can also provide heat quantity measurement to measure the heat transfer of the process media.
The DUC offers a clear cost advantage for large diameter process pipes as it does not require extensive amounts of materials to build, does not create significant shipping costs, and does not require extensive construction or system shut down time to install.
KOBOLD DUC Ultrasonic Transit Time Flow Meters use the effect of acceleration and deceleration of acoustic signals traveling in a moving liquid. Two ultrasonic clamp-on transducers are mounted externally on a pipe and produce an acoustic path. The transducers send and receive signals and the subsequent transit times are measured by an electronic flow transmitter. The signal is accelerated when there is flow in the forward direction. The return signal is slowed by the flow in the opposite direction. The difference in time between the two, together with the path length in between the two transducers, is then used to determine the average flow velocity. This principle is known as the acoustic time-of-flight principle.
The DUC emits a coded signal pattern (DSP or Digital Signal Processing) into the pipe. The received signals are then compared with the sent signals and only the signal pattern, which correlates with the original one, will be used for flow calculation for cross correlation based signal evaluation. The DSP calculation of the time-of-flight is a purely digital transit time measurement. To learn more about Ultrasonic Flow Meters and their advantages and limitations, visit our in depth article.
KOBOLD also offers the DUK Compact Inline Ultrasonic Flow Meter that delivers a cost advantage for smaller process pipe diameter applications.
